Mel Bose – The Terrain Tutor – has been building terrain for almost as long as he can remember. When he was five, Mel built playsets for his little green army men in the corner of a craft store. He was often assisted by model railroaders who were regulars at the store and, by the time he turned 15, Mel was primed for a life of building terrain. Mel has traveled the world, as a medic in the army, a physiotherapist, and even a salesman. He has worked with people from all walks of life, and looked at things from many different perspectives. It is this approach that he brings to his successful YouTube channel, The Terrain Tutor.
Since 2014, Mel has made a living from sharing his passion – teaching people everything he knows about building terrain for tabletop wargaming, for hobbyists, clubs, displays, and for dioramas – and it’s that passion and knowledge that he is bringing to this book.

A really awesome product from The Terrain Tutor. Beautifully presented with lots of great photos. It covers all aspects of terrain and makes it easy to understand with step by step descriptions.

This, by far, is the best terrain building guidebook ever. Mel explains Everything! Everything is described – every idea, every technique, and every product used. I can’t think of anything missing. Just wished I had purchased it sooner. Well worth the price.

Good book, the pictures help with the descriptions and instructions. Lots of good info and tips for building your own terrain for RPGs.

I wanted to support the author by buying the book but tbh I get more from his YT vids than I did from this book. It felt very basic, a lot of pages are used to explain some of the simplest techniques and what products to use.

The ideas, photos and the time spent on each subject. Easy how to book for anyone trying to improve their terrain making skills.

Great reference! Exactly what I was looking for.

IMHO Battlefields in Miniature: Making Realistic and Effective Terrain for Wargames and books by David Wright provide more valueable information on using various techniques and materials. Mel’s book is a bit expensive considering his techniques and use of material is free off of you tube. If the book was half price then Mel’s book would be ok. One metric to use is most realistic material for thatched roof, David Wright recommends plumbers hemp which I find was the best solution. Mel recommended “thatching with clay, using hd foam and the old school teddy bear fur technique”- which I consider inferior.Luke’s APS and Gobbertown Hobbies are some other you tube sources of DIY minature diorama ideas. The following are things which should be covered for round rounded treatment: scale size of fence, roof tiles, vegetation, buildings, and furniture to various mm such as 20mm or 1/72, use of LEDS (e.g., camp fire) and smoke (from model railroad trains), 3D printing and mold making to copy your own creations.Another element is the use of sound(e.g., explosions)/music(theme tied to diorama) to add more realism. One of best examples of dioramas is SteamGeezer and Son Independent Traders on youtube using clever original design.

Brilliant for terrain builders.
So decided over lock down to build a terrain board at home to enjoy better games with my son. This book helped me no end. Not only does it provide great ideas and ways to build your terrain but actually explains materials, technics and how to work with what you have and need. A lot of tutorials already assume you know how to work with the material so don’t say what works best with what. This book explains it in detail and helped no end when I was having issues. A must have for any would be terrain build and I would even say a good help to people who have some experience.
